Well it's official. I've selected by race-day shoes. I added my new Momentum "13.1" footnote to my old "strong" one...so there is no turning back now. It's funny - I hated these shoes when I got them. It was after a long ordeal with New Balance customer service (who were great by the way - I just was finicky about shoes) and I finally just kept the shoes and figured I would wear them for cross-training or just around. My Brooks have been my go-to running shoes for over 4 years. Well, somehow I started wearing these for runs and I started really liking them. So much, that I wore them for the Horsetooth Half Marathon in April. I've decided to give them one more go...but judging by the wear and tear this will probably be their last race! I'll be on the hunt for new running shoes soon!
As race day draws near (1 week away to be exact) I'm getting REALLY excited. I don't want to jinx anything but I honestly feel like I'm in the best shape of my life. I've made it through training without getting sick (thank you essential oils!!) and without getting injured. Woohoo! I might even say the number 26.2 has been floating through my brain lately - ack! I think for me, the key has been taking it slow. My long runs have been slower than usual, but I think that is what has helped me push my short runs harder, not miss workouts and keep up with strength and yoga. I've also been wearing compression socks after my long runs and I notice a HUGE difference on the days that I forget. My legs recover so much faster when I use them!
Besides one really bad run (read: screaming kids, sleep deprived moms and a heroic roadside rescue), I've made it through the rest pretty darn happy! I've got to say - it feels good to feel good on the road.
I am so thankful that this race came at the time that it did. Earlier this summer I got really discouraged with my fitness - it was so hot, I wasn't motivated to run and things just weren't clicking with other workouts. It has been so great having a goal to work towards, a plan to follow and I just feel like ME again!!
Now onto some GOALS. A friend of mine turned me on to this goal setting method a while back, and I used it for my last half. I thought I would do it again for this one. It's SO HARD sharing goals with the world (or the 3 people - hi mom - who read this blog)...but I think it's brave. It shows commitment. It makes me vulnerable. In fact, I just saw this quote! "
"If you have a goal, write it down. If you do not write it down you do not have a goal - you have a wish," ~Steve Maraboli
So let's do this.
Harbor Half Marathon Goals
Goal #1 - To Finish
Goal #2 - To Have Fun
Goal #3 - A realistic time goal
Goal #4 - A God-sized time goal.
Goal #2 - To Have Fun
Goal #3 - A realistic time goal
Goal #4 - A God-sized time goal.
In any race, of course a great goal is to finish. And perhaps even more importantly, to have fun! I hope I can nail these 2 for sure. As for goal #3 - A realistic time goal for me this race would be 2:15, based off of our long run speeds and my goal to run a bit faster. My GOD SIZED GOAL is to PR for a second time this year! I had NO IDEA I would run the Horsetooth Half as fast as I did (2:11) but I sure would love to run it under 2:10! Can I do it? We'll see!!
