Aloha! I’ve spent just a few days in Hawaii and am already feeling more refreshed and relaxed. It’s amazing what a little sun and water can do for a girl! While I could lie on the beach all day, I like to be sure to get in at least a little workout every day while on vacation. Somehow it doesn’t feel like as much as a chore when you’re on vacation – it becomes more of a luxury!
I started off my first full day of vacation with a YouTube yoga video. This one was a perfect workout for the morning. My internal clock was a little messed up with the time change so I got up pretty early! I was also kind of stiff from a day of travel and a new bed. The short yoga workout got me stretched out, awake, and ready for a day of fun.
We spent the day driving up the coast of Oahu, stopping at beaches and shops along the way. The best part of the day was body surfing/sand-face-planting in the huge waves at Sunset Beach!
I wrapped up the most perfect day by running a couple miles down Oahu’s North Shore, while the sun was setting over the horizon. The switch to sea level from 7600 feet sure makes you feel like a running rock star! A dive into the ocean and floating in the beautiful bay after I finished was the best recovery I think you could find.
While I was running, while enjoying the gorgeous scenery, I was thinking about why I run. I always like to know what motivates people to do what they do…I guess it’s the trainer in me. As I thought about my own answers, I realized how often they have changed throughout the last few years. I have had times when I ran because I wanted to lose a few extra newlywed pounds. I have run sometimes because I had someone waiting at the trailhead for me. I have had times when I ran because that’s what my training program said, even when I really didn’t want to.

But TODAY...this is WHY I RUN...
- I run because my body is strong enough
- I run because it’s something that can be “my thing”
- I run because I really like to drink margaritas after a race
- I run because I need an excuse to buy neon shoes and clothes
- I run because there is always a new personal best, and another way to race yourself
- I run because I can do it anywhere and explore new places
- I run because there is something about that completely drained feeling you have after a long run that makes you feel like a total rock star
- I run because you can get fit while being with a friend
- I run because my legs get antsy when I don’t
- I run because I can come home with mud up to my knees and sweaty messy hair and feel more beautiful than I ever do all made up.
- I run because I need a good reason to carb load once in a while.
- I run because there are races I haven’t finished yet
