Essential Oils for Runners

I recently did a series on Instagram on how I incorporate essential oils in my running. I had such a great response, I thought I would compile everything into 1 blog post for easy reference.

I'll have you know, I haven't always been into the "natural" stuff. , I've always been pretty knowledgable about health and fitness, and I live a pretty healthy life. I used to think that if I exercised regularly and ate reasonably well that was enough. I never considered the effect of the hundreds of toxins I was exposing myself to every day.

Did you know that the average woman is exposed to 216 toxic chemicals a day through hair and skin products, cleaning supplies and over the counter medicine? Eeks! I don't know about the rest of you, but I definitely didn't think twice about popping an ibuprofen (or 3) almost daily when I was training a lot.

If you're ready to take your body to a whole new level of healthy, I've put together some great ways to incorporate oils into your current running or fitness routine!

When I need a little kick in the pants, I apply a drop or two of my favorite emotions blend: MOTIVATE! The name explains it all. It's a blend of uplifting oils that help you get stuff done! It smells SO good and it really does work! .

Another favorite motivating oil for me is Wild Orange. The citrus scent gets me awake and focused.

Both of these oils could be diffused or applied diluted on the wrists before a run. I love being able to take a quick sniff mid-run too!

Doesn't it always seem like when you're hitting your high mileage weeks in training or getting close to a race - your body decides to catch some sort of crud?! The WORST!

High stress (physical or mental) can often wear on your immune system, making you more vulnerable to catching something. I'm SO glad that I've got OnGuard to keep me mommin' and runnin' all the time!

This immune supporting blend is the perfect example of how you can use oils 3 different ways:
1. Aromatically - I love diffusing OnGuard when we've been exposed to germs. It's definitely running on loop if we are feeling under the weather too! I actually cleans the air for me and supports our whole family at once!

2. Topically - the roller bottle makes applying OnGuard so easy! A swipe along the bottoms of my feet and down my spine is the perfect way to support a healthy immune system on a daily basis.

3. Internally - these soft gels are the BOMB! They combine OnGuard with other awesome immune boosters for the perfect kick of feeling good when you're starting to come down with something. I take these twice a day when I'm feeling crummy! .

Breathe is another favorite oil blend among runners.

Whether you suffer from seasonal discomforts, are struggling with cold symptoms or simply want to open your airways to be a more efficient runner...Breathe will be your buddy! I love diffusing Breathe at night for better, snore-free sleep and rolling some on my chest when I'm feeling tightness. It's amazing how "breathe-easy" you feel, just seconds after applying! I fill my 10ml roller bottle with 10 drops of Breathe and the rest with fractionated coconut oil. This was the first oil I ever used and it is still one of my faves!

Along with foam rolling and yoga, lemongrass is great at joint and muscle discomfort that come along with an active lifestyle. Inflammation doesn't stand a chance when I've got this oil on hand!

Dilute with fractionated coconut oil and massage into sore areas. I love this one on my calves and quads. Bonus!!! It supports healthy circulation!

Who gets a nervous stomach before a race? ✋🏻 DigestZen is a pretty awesome blend for all things "tummy". This roller is filled with fractionated coconut oil and an awesome blend of tummy calming oils like fennel and peppermint. Simply roll the oils in a circle around your belly button and massage them in. Perfect before your next run or race!

While I'm mostly focusing on just essential oils, I couldn't miss talking about the DDR Prime supplement (it's filled with amazing oils, so it counts!) . This has been a game changer y'all.

{Little personal note} Since having my baby in August, my joints aren't what they used to be. Between weight gain/loss, hormones effecting my ligaments and my back and hips getting out of whack...things just don't feel good when I run sometimes. I had actually had this bottle of DDR Prime laying around and for whatever reason, hadn't tried it. When I realized it was jam packed with antioxidants and oils formulated to reduce the effects of oxidative stress, inflammation and more, I started adding it to my morning supplement routine right away! Let me tell you, I noticed an almost immediate difference. I was feeling like an 85 year old by 8pm each day, and all of a sudden, I felt so renewed, while still continuing with my run streak and strength & yoga workouts. Like all busy mamas, some days I forget to take it and I can totally tell! I got my football coach hubby to start taking them too - as he like to run but his o-lineman knees don't really agree. He's become a daily user now too and is loving how he feels!

If you don't want to get sidelined due to chronic stress/joint issues - this has got to be on your list!

Deep Blue Rub is AMAZING y'all! It has that nice hot/cool/tingly feeling when you massage it into sore muscles. I love using this one before and after runs on my hamstrings and lower back! Deep Blue also comes in a pure oil blend. I've made this into a roller bottle for easy on the go relief, and my favorite way to use it is with Epsom salts in a hot bath soak! Both DB products include pure, therapeutic purposes skin for soothing your hard working muscles.

Aromatouch is another awesome blend I like for soothing sore muscles after a big run. It's more mild than Deep Blue and perfect for massages and bath soaks!

Now, my absolute favorite way to use peppermint oil is in homemade peppermint mochas, but there is so much more this oil has to offer runners!
If you were to use only one oil ever as a runner, this would be the one to use because there are so many uses! Did you know that 1 tiny drop has the potency of 28 cups of peppermint tea! Wowza!

.As a runner, here are my top 3 ways I use peppermint:
1. To get up and go - perfect for early morning runs, inhaling some peppermint is invigorating, opens your airways and has been shown to help improve endurance! 🙌🏻 2. Tummy troubles - a drop under the tongue can help soothe a queezy-tummy from the wrong pre-run meal or a nervous stomach! 🏃🏼‍♀️
3. Head Tension - runners can't afford to miss a run due to nagging head tension! A simple drop massaged into the temples, neck or forehead can get you back on the road right away, the natural way!
.Use peppermint to help you stay strong and feel awesome no matter how far you're running!

So, are you ready to make your next run a little better?
