Football Wife Life: Spring Ball {plus a Huddle Link Up!}

It's been a little while since I've done a Blogger's Huddle Link Up - so I thought Spring Ball time would be the perfect time! We've been loving spring ball here in South Texas - last year we were still in Colorado while The Coach was here at this time, so we completely missed spring practices. I have to say they are the best - because it's not so hot like is for our fall practices!

Little M has been having a blast running the track, balancing on everything and swinging on hurdles - and I've been loving having a place for her to get all her wiggles out! The fresh air is amazing and there is nothing like the sound of helmets and pads and whistles and yelling. On practice days, sometimes The Coach doesn't make it home in time for Little's bedtime, so it's nice that she gets a chance to see her Daddy and give him a hug, or at least let him chase her for a second or two.

Another thing we've been going through this spring is the news that some of our good friends on staff will be leaving this summer. This isn't a new concept here in the coaching world but I can't say it gets any easier - especially when it's a family you've truly come to love. It's been sad thinking about the upcoming season without them. I'm sure I"ll post more on that later.

One of my new year's goals was to get to know my husband's players better and so far I have to say I'm failing completely. Unfortunately, with Baby #2 due the week before season begins I'm not sure how well I'm going to do with this at all this year! One of the ways I'm going to try a little harder is to print out his roster and talk with my husband about each player and try to at least associate names and numbers. I'm hoping we can have them over for a BBQ or 2 as well before the season begins. Coach's wives out there - any tips for me?
We've got a few more weeks of spring practices until we wrap up with the annual spring game at the end of the month. It will be fun to have another "game day" weekend before we're a family of 4!!!

I know this is probably different for me, but one way I really get to know the kids is by hanging out at practices and making light conversation. It is amazing how if you start talking to a couple of them all of the sudden they are all coming over and saying hi. I usually start with the injured list because they are just sitting on the sidelines and helping move equipment during practice. I talk to Coach about each kid so I have a little background information on them before I ever meet them. Then I move to Coach's position kids and get to know them. The more I show up to practices, sit on the sidelines, and yell at kids at every game, the more they know my face and who I am. That way after the game when I go on the field, I can say congratulations to certain kids or tell them how great a certain play was and they know exactly who I am and are more comfortable around me. It is a lot easier for me to meet them because for the most part they see me during basketball and track to and it is easier to talk with them then.

Hey Lauren - thanks for the tips! I love the idea of starting with the injured list. I'm always so busy chasing M around practice that I just don't pay enough attention. Aiming to make it more of a priority. Thanks for the inspiration!

Hi Alyssa!
Congrats on baby #2! We are expecting our little girl mid July so I completely relate to what you're going through! And especially in the challenge of getting to know the players... In fact, on Episode 12 (released April 8) of the Married to the Game Podcast we talked about this topic. I know my biggest mistake this year (new school) was not attending the parent/player meeting before tryouts. I have felt do disconnected because I feel like an outsider. And it doesn't help that we live 1.5 hrs away, so I'm not able to attend all the games... I think having the players over to your house for a cookout is a great idea! I have heard of many that do this and I know I WILL make this happen for next year! Again because of the distance from his school to our home, we chose to host a long ball competition and cookout at the ballpark this year in lieu of having them drive out to our house. It was fun and a success, but it's just not the same as having them to your house.
Good luck with Baby #2! I look forward to hearing more ideas about how to get connected with the team!

Hi Leyla! I will have to check out your podcast for sure! I can imagine how tough it is to live far away - I'm really thankful that we are just a quick drive through town away from practice (and daddy!). I like your cookout idea - we were thinking of having a bbq at the beach! Good luck with your pregnancy - our little girls will be close! Yay for more little girl football fans this fall!
