Have you tried HEMP? {a giveaway - CLOSED}

About 4 years ago, I went to a coffee shop with a friend - and in search of a dairy free latte option, I tried hemp milk. I wasn't a huge fan. Maybe it was the milk, maybe it was the coffee...but I haven't tried anything with hemp ever since. Recently, I had the opportunity to try out Manitoba Harvest Hemp Hearts. I was especially intrigued because my youngest sister has recently been on a very limited diet for food intolerances and HEMP is one of the few things she can eat. Well hmmm?! I better try this out and see how it is! I would love to have a new super food on my menu and would love to share some recipe ideas with her too!

So what are Hemp Hearts? They are raw, shelled hemp seeds. Hemp is a plant that is actually used for lots of different products including food, paper, clothing and fuel. We of course are trying it out in the FOOD form! It's really a "super food".  It's packed with Omega 3's and Omega 6's, protein and fiber. The Hemp Hearts look like a ground up nut or seed, and they are super convenient to sprinkle on foods to pack a nutritional punch! 

This week I've had lots of fun experimenting with Hemp Hearts in my breakfast foods. First, I tried them on top of my apple cinnamon oats. It was delicious! I like the crunch they added to the creamy oats, and they had a distinct but delicious nutty flavor. 

Then, I tried them on top of my weekend waffles along with some peanut butter! Also a winning combo. Probably my FAVORITE way to use the Hemp Hearts so far is stirred in to a smoothie. I made a blueberry-banana-almond smoothie and they were just the extra touch the smoothie needed. And I love that it added healthy fats and protein without the sliminess of chia seeds or boringness of flaxseeds (my typical smoothie add-ins). I sprinkled them on top and stirred them in, I'm sure you could blend them in too! But they are just so fun to sprinkle! 

Hemp Hearts aren't only useful for breakfast, if you check out the Manitoba Harvest website they have tons of amazing recipes for all types of meals featuring hemp hearts. I'm going to be sharing my Hemp Hearts with my baby sis too...I hope she likes them as much as I did! I'm so glad I had the chance to try such a great product, I have all new feelings about hemp now! Maybe I'll have to give a hemp latte a try again sometime...maybe.
