It's JULY! The highlight of summer - my favorite season! I love all things sunshine, swimming pool, beach and BBQ...so the 4th of July is one of my favorite holidays for sure! Well that and I love all things USA! I'm not one to worry about being "swimsuit ready" or anything, but having some fired up abs in the summer never hurt anyone last time I checked. So, before you bite into a juicy burger or sip on that ice cold beer this weekend, do your body a favor and do this workout! You (and your swimsuit) won't regret it!
Disclaimer: Although I am an AFAA certified Personal Fitness Trainer, you should consult a physician before starting any exercise program or diet. If you choose to do any workouts on this website, you do so at your own risk.
The Workout: Do each of these 5 exercises for 10 reps (except the boat pose - hold this 30 seconds). Repeat the circuit 4x....for the 4th of course! For best results - complete near your favorite body of water. :-) Last weekend we explored North Padre Island National Seashore and photographed this workout for ya. It's one of my new favorite places and Little M had a blast chasing seagulls!
Keep your head, neck and arms relaxed. Use your lower abs to press your feet the sky and then slowly lower down.
Hold this pose! If you're feeling extra patriotic, lower you upper body slightly and straighten your legs.
This will get your heart rate up mid-workout...perfect for burning fat. Start with a squat and then explode into a star shape! Return with control back to a squat. Smiling recommended.
This is a 3 part exercise. Start in a plank, with your body long and straight, abs and glutes tight and shoulders over your hands. Bring your right knee to your chest, then tap back at start. Then bring your right knee to your right elbow, and tap back at start. Finally, bring your right knee to your left elbow and return to start. Repeat with your left leg. Thats 1 rep!
It's a Russian twist...but hey it's the 4th of July so I'm dubbing it the American Twist! Start in boat post and then using your entire upper body (powered by your obliques) to twist to one side and tap the ground. Repeat to the other side for 1 rep. Use a weight (or a young child) for an extra challenge.
I hope you have a WONDERFUL holiday weekend filled with being active and enjoying yummy food. One of the best parts of summer is how easy it is to enjoy HEALTHY treats! Bring on the watermelon and fruit salad! And of course, I can't press "post" without sending a HUGE thank you to those past and present who are the reason we live in this free country. Your service and sacrifice is immeasurable. THANK YOU!
How about you?
