I know it's ironic - I'm trying (not 100% successfully, I might add) to eliminate sugar from my diet this month, and here I am, going to ooh and ahh over a fantastic gluten free bakery. I've been meaning to post about this since my visit to Philadelphia in November, but I guess it just takes some extreme sugar cravings to really get me to put my nose to the grindstone. So...if you're not one of us who is trying to cut out sweets from your diet. Read on. Or if you are....you can drool over your computer like I am right now. And when it's time for a treat, scoot your boots right over the Sweet Freedom Bakery. Now that I think of it...if you're going to have a sweet treat, this is the place to do it. All of their products are made with natural, unrefined sugars like coconut sugar. Totally a free pass, right?!
I mentioned my little stop at Sweet Freedom Bakery in my "Traveling with Babies" post last month. Honestly, I can't stop thinking/talking/dreaming about it. I know, I'm a total food nerd. I first heard about Sweet Freedom Bakery quite a while ago and just couldn't wait until I had the chance to try it! When our Thanksgiving road trip plans were close to Philadelphia, I begged and begged that we could take a detour/stop downtown so I could check it out! My hubby has known me long enough that he had no say in the decision when gluten free cookies were in the equation. So we added it to the itinerary!
Ok so here's what it's all about. It a bakery with 3 locations in the Philadelphia area where EVERYTHING, and I mean EVERYTHING is gluten free. Not only is everything gluten free, it is also vegan (dairy, casein, egg free), soy, corn and peanut free. How perfect for someone with allergies...you don't have to worry about cross-contamination at all! Now, if you've eaten vegan/GF baked goods before or done your own GF baking, you know it's tough to get something that is absolutely delicious. Sweet Freedom is the answer my friends.
When I entered the bakery, it was so crazy to look at the bakery case and know I could pick ANYTHING. That SO has never happened to me. You know, it's usually the small ugly cookie in the top corner for $5. It was so hard to choose...I seriously wanted everything. The poor girl behind the counter had no idea how excited I was to be there. She probably thought I was completely crazy! I ended up coming away with a chocolate chip cookie sandwich with chocolate filling, an apple cider donut and a magic cookie bar.
Now, I could go on and on about how delicious the treats were, but I think what can explain it more was my husband's reaction. He, in all of his gluten/dairy/sugar-loving glory was SHOCKED at how good they were. After a bite (a small bite - I don't share well) of my cookie sandwich I think he only response was "WOW! This is gluten free?". That's how you can tell it was really good! My favorite was definitely the cookie sandwich, with the magic cookie bar taking a close second. The donut didn't quite live up to my expectations but I grew up going to apple orchards in NH and eating hot, fresh, gluten-y apple cider donuts in big red barns...so I had very high standards. But man...that cookie sandwich. I've never had anything like it! I can't even wrap my head around how they can make something so amazing without all of those "key" ingredients!
If you are ever in the Philadelphia area - I highly recommend checking out the Sweet Freedom Bakery locations. I can't wait to go back and try their other shops and even more of the drool-inducing treats! I've heard you can order treats online as well, so if you ever get the urge to make my day...I'm just sayin'.
how about you?
Do you have a favorite GF bakery? I'll add it to my travel-bucket list!
