Woohoo! Book review time! I'm not sure if I've actually ever done a full book review here on the blog so I guess today is the day! I had mixed emotions when I received the book "Run the World: My 3,500-Mile Journey Through Running Cultures Around the Globe" by Becky Wade to read and review. First, I was super excited! I've been dying to dig into a good book, and one about running, traveling and an Olympic hopeful? Sounded good to me! I was a bit skeptical too. I've often found in books written by runners that they are either a.) poorly written or b.) a brag-fest, mostly talking about their own accomplishments, race times and awards. I'm happy to announce that Run the World is NEITHER OF THESE THINGS! Yes!
Becky Wade has chronicled her year spent traveling the world, immersing herself in running cultures in countries from Ethiopia to Australia to Finland, and numerous stops in between! I was quickly engrossed in her stories, and anxiously awaited reading about her next stops around the globe. It was the perfect mix of running history, cultural tidbits (and lots about FOOD!), training observations and experimentations and Becky's personal stories. I love running wherever I travel, and she took this concept to a whole new level. I especially loved her insight into recreational and competitive running in each country, and gleaned bits and pieces from everywhere to incorporate into her own running regimen. By the end of the book not only was I inspired as a runner, I felt like I knew Becky Wade, and maybe even for a few minutes forgot that she would kick my booty if we ever went out for a run together!
With the Rio Olympics less than 2 weeks away (yippee!!!) this book was a perfect read to help me pass the time until they begin! I've been waiting pretty much 3.9 years for August 5th to roll around, so getting to know the story behind an athlete as well as about athletic cultures across the world was so timely! I only wish that I could be cheering Becky on in the Olympics but unfortunately, she didn't make the U.S. team this time around. Needless to say, I'll have a new perspective when watching the running events in Rio, and will be on the look-out for athletes from the countries that I now feel so much more connected to! If you love running, traveling or the Olympics, you should totally check out this book. It was just released earlier this month and is available on Amazon!
